Ruud beat Tommy Paul 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-0 in four hours in the third round.
He beat 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in three before a three-hour semi-final against Karen Khachanov.
