While some diets, such as those high in sugar or red meat, such as the Western diet, can raise the risk of colorectal cancer, the keto diet may assist to prevent it.

Researchers discovered that the keto diet produces a chemical called beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), which can prevent intestinal cancers from growing in size, according to a new study published in the Nature magazine.

Sugars raise the risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic illnesses in the Western diet, which is abundant in refined carbs.

Inflammation and chronic disease, including malignancies like colorectal cancer, are more likely when gut health is compromised.

While this may make the keto diet appear to be the best option for cancer patients, Duffy points out that it is not "Patients undergoing cancer treatment should avoid any form of restrictive diet.

Treatments can cause a variety of side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and mouth sores, as well as a loss of appetite, which means patients may go hungry "I find it difficult to eat anything, let alone stick to a strict diet.

"Traditional keto diets allow less than 50 grammes of carbohydrates per day, which equates to three portions of carbohydrates such as fruit, bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes."

Each patient has unique food concerns, which is why the dietitian they work with should "develop individualised diet programmes for each patient to maximise excellent nutrition and keep the patient healthy in their fight against cancer."
